Leaving Haneda to catch a KLM flight out of KIX. This ANA's morning flight is the same as the one I took in September last year, and even though I booked with deeply discounted Y-class ticket, I can get international business class seat. Of course, no breakfast is served.

KIX発のKLMで飛ぶために羽田を発つ。このANAの朝便は昨年9月に乗ったのと同じフライトで、格安エコノミーのチケットでも国際線ビジネスクラスのシートに座ることができる。もちろん、朝食はなし。

A GIFT FROM THAI

TG, TG, TG, and a bit of Star Alliance partners (Asiana & EgyptAir). A bag full of collectables has arrived. This is a gift from Mr. Kawabe, TG's Marketing Manager for Japan, who was my client at Dentsu and has been one of the most important supporters of my aviation hobby.

GIFTS FROM DELTA

It's a bit early for Christmas, but gifts from Delta Air Lines has arrived at my aviation museum. First, 1/400 model of their Boeing 777-200LR with some promotional materials.

クリスマスにはまだちょっと早いが、僕の航空ミュージアムにデルタ航空からのギフトが届いた。一つ目。デルタのボーイング777-200LRの400分の1モデルと、いろいろなプロモーショナルグッズ。

Second, Oregon Pinot noir with Delta label. It goes to my wine cellar.

二つ目。デルタのラベルがついたオレゴンのピノ・ノワール。これは僕のワインセラーへ。

And Third. A real gem. Tiffany Gramercy wine glasses with Delta logo. Made in Italy. Thank you, Delta. I will keep flying with you.

三つ目。これはお宝。デルタのロゴが入ったティファニーのグラマシーワイングラス。イタリア製。ありがとう、デルタ。これからもずっと乗り続けますよ。

Delta Air Lines invited me to Top Flyer Dinner at Grand Ballroom of The Ritz-Carlton, Tokyo. A feast with hard-core Delta fans.

デルタ航空がザ・リッツ・カールトン東京グランドボールルームでのトップフライヤーディナーに招待してくれた。ハードコアなデルタファンとの宴。

At the venue, they ran TV spot created my previous agency Wieden+Kennedy.

会場では、僕の前職であるワイデン+ケネディが作ったTVスポットも上映。

A TREASURE FROM THE NORTH

Thanks to a contributor, an ultimate collector's item was added to my aviation museum. (Drum roll...) An airsickness bag of Air Koryo representing Democratic People's Republic of Korea!

A cup of coffee with the horizon of the Japan Sea. At a cozy cafe called Port Dijk on my way to Komatsu Airport.

コーヒーを日本海の水平線と。小松空港へ向かう途中、ポートダイクという名の気持ちの良いカフェで。

YOURS HOTEL FUKUI (2)

One night in Fukui City. This city seriously needs a hotel with bell service, king-size bed, and 12 PM checkout.

福井市で一泊。この街にはベルサービス、キングサイズベッド、12時チェックアウトがあるホテルが本当に必要。

A TASTE OF THE JAPAN SEA

If you like to enjoy genuine seafood, a restaurant run by a fish merchant near the fishing port is the ideal place. And this is it. "Takesho" in Mikuni Town, Fukui.

もし美味い魚を食べたいなら、漁港のそばにある魚屋がやっている料理屋が理想的。例えば、ここ。福井県三国の「たけ庄」。

THUNDERBIRD

My trip continues from Kyoto to Hokuriku on JR's limited express Thunderbird. I don't know why a train running on the north shore of Japan has a name of a car from Detroit, or British sci-fi TV show, or native American's myth. I wish Japanese trains could have beautiful Japanese names. Once there was limited express Raicho (Snow grouse) running on the same route named after a mountain bird inhabiting these regions. It seems they have just translated Rai (Thunder)-cho(bird) character by character to "modernize" the train name and eventually come up with the English name which has nothing to do with anything. It's so sad to see they abandoned a beautiful traditional name just to replace with a mistranslation.

京都から北陸へ、JRの特急「サンダーバード」で旅を続ける。日本海沿岸を走る特急に、なぜデトロイトのクルマ、もしくは英国のSFテレビ番組、もしくはネイティブアメリカンの神話の名前がついているのだろう。日本を走る列車には、美しい日本語の名前がついていて欲しいもの。かつてこのルートには、この地域に生息する山鳥に由来する「雷鳥」という名を持った特急が走っていた。でも、どうやら列車名を近代化（！）するために「雷鳥」を文字単位で訳して、結果的に縁もゆかりもない英語名にしてしまったらしい。誤訳と引き換えに、美しい伝統的な名前を捨ててしまうのは何とも寂しい。

Every sightseeing train running on the other side of river stops in front of this hotel. Then a lot of passengers' cameras flash at once like sparklers among trees.

川の対岸を行く観光列車はみんな、このホテルの目の前で停車する。すると沢山の乗客がカメラのフラッシュを一斉にたく。まるで木々の中で光る線香花火のよう。
